To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the World Series of Poker, the event organizers this year are putting on a special $40K buy in event. This will be the very first WSOP tournament this year and is certain to attract only the best (heavily bankrolled) poker players to play in it. There are already expectations that this may offer the best televised final table in WSOP history and that may just be the case!
Some pro players such as Mike Sexton question this format however. His logic is that such a large buy in event may kill many players bankrolls, preventing them from playing in as many events. Also, he feels that the first event shouldn’t have a larger buy in than the Championship event. Other players have echoed this belief but it hasn’t really been discussed much by the poker press.
Also this year there will be no rebuy events. This move was not unexpected as it was discussed last year but still stirred some controversy. Some players (Mike Sexton included again) felt that it allowed players with larger bankrolls the opportunity to “buy” their way into the deep stages of the tournament and thus, gave them an unfair advantage to win a WSOP bracelet. The consensus amongst the pro poker players is that a WSOP bracelet should be won outright by playing through the entire field, not via rebuys.
Regardless, this years WSOP is certain to be an exciting one when the action kicks off this May!
