PokerStars has announced its new women’s poker league, back for February 7th, 2011. The purpose of this is to invite women into the sport in a stress free and friendly environment where they can feel comfortable. These events feature low buy-ins as well as freerolls. The grand purse is a PokerStars Women Live Event prize package.
The party starts on February 7th with two tourneys running daily, one with a buy-in of $0.10, which is held at 2:00 p.m. ET and the other costing $1.10 to buy into, taking place at 9:00 p.m. ET.
The freeroll takes place on Sunday with entries for the $0.10 daily events.
Winners will get both monthly and yearly cash rewards and after one year, the winner will get a PokerStars Women Live Event package that will be worth up to $4,000 in live event buy-ins.
There have been other attempts to acknowledge the many women who partake in live and online poker, such as women’s events at the PokerStars Caribbean Classic and even the World Series of Poker. This is a further attempt to jump on the women in poker bandwagon and give them an opportunity to play the game in the comforts of their own league. PokerStars wants to lead the women’s poker movement, but it is likely that other online poker clubs will take an interest in women’s poker, adding more women’s only events.
It is no secret that females can play poker just as good as the guys (e.g. Annie Duke, Jennifer Tilly, Tiffany Michelle, Jennifer Harman, etc.), and for the most part they women in poker are well respected and treated pretty fairly. Now is the perfect time for the trend to spread and more women to join the tables both online and at live events. PokerStars is encouraging this with the Women’s Poker League.
