With all the myriad of social networking websites available at the moment such as Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace, it was only a matter of time before poker pro imposters would start appearing on the network as well.
In the past 2 years, stage celebrities, poker pros and sports stars have been even more under the spotlight when marketing out themselves through the various networks at their disposal but this has now back-fired for some with more and more imposters pretending to be the real pro. Many have to start being very wary when adding people to their Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or other online social networking sites as many have been reported to being imposters and fake personas.
One such person dealing with this problem at the moment is poker celebrity, Patrik Antonius who has found out that someone is faking being him through a created Twitter account. Antonius does not even have a Twitter account himself but the account has been active and abundant of data with the imposter posting regular updates about Antonius.
On discovery, Antonius stated; “Someone has registered a Twitter account using my name and now he’s posting stuff like it’s written by me. He’s been following me pretty closely and knows what I’ve been doing, so one might think they are actually written by me.”
The best sites to follow are the “Official” website of the said persona with some other piece of information that will confirm the data posted is real. Sometimes this may be hard to decipher as the data posted is so well connected to reality.
This is what happened to Antonius when some personal incidents like a recent confrontation of him with Doyle Brunson has been made public on this twitter account even though not many knew this had happened. The real Antonius was completely oblivious to this happening and subsequently had no idea what Doyle was talking about following this event.
Doyle was offended because the twitter comment stated that Patrik had played Doyle and won over him easily and that Doyle must be getting old. Eventually, Patrik denied all these comments saying that he had never made these ridicoulus comments online; saying; “I don’t have a Twitter account and I have never posted a single word there. I have no interest in posting updates about my comings or goings. I’m a private person and I want to keep my private life to myself. I would never want to post entries telling everybody where I am and what I’m doing right now.”
