A lot has been going on for the 9 finalists during these crucial 4 – 5 months; that is since the 2009 World Series of Poker finalists were announced until the day they actually face off each other on the felt.
This ‘new system’ that was put into place with the players having a 4 month break until the final, has in fact been very beneficial to them not just to prepare for the big event but also for their new endorsements and sponsors.
The event is gaining a lot of publicity and so are the 9 players with 8 of them already being inked for endorsement deal sponsors with major online poker rooms. The players will in turn be wearing the poker room’s logo during the main televised final table play, with the final table member also earning a fee.
Eric Buchman, holder of the second-largest amount of chips at the table as well as Joe Cada, fifth in chips and Kevin Schaffel, sixth in chips are listed under the online poker room PokerStars.
Second in chips is Steve Begleiter and James Akenead, ninth in chips and Phil Ivey (seventh in chips) are, on the other hand, listed with online poker room Full Tilt Poker. Ivey was already under contract with Full Tilt through an established deal and is now renewed with them.
Everest Poker has signed Antoine Saout, who is eighth in chips at the final table whilst Jeffrey Shulman, who is fourth in chips at the final table, is enlisted as editor of poker magazine Card Player. The latter owns online poker room Spade Club and Jeffrey confirmed he will be wearing the Spade Club logos on his clothing at the final table.
They way things are standing at the moment it is only chip-leader Darvin Moon, who is the only member of this year’s WSOP Main Event final table who has not accepted any endorsement deal with the internet poker rooms. Moon has said that his reason is that he does not want to play online, so he has refused many offers.
This scenario is a déjà-vu of the 2008 WSOP Main Event, as there were also eight of the nine final table members who had got endorsement deals. The difference is that last year all the deals were with PokerStars.com, while as of this year the WSOP announced that a maximum of 3 players could be inked with the same poker room and not more, thus giving a chance to the other poker rooms.
Finally, this new system has allowed for the WSOP and the 9 finalists to gain even more publicity and build the memento for the finale.
