It has seemingly become a mission of PokerStars to sign every WSOP winner and big-name player associated with the final table of the WSOP. First it was Chris Moneymaker, whose win in 2003 put PokerStars, and the WSOP for that matter, on the map. The next year, Greg Raymer, another Team PokerStars, took the WSOP first place title. In 2005, the World Champion poker player title went to Joe Hachem, also signed under the PokerStars brand.
Now, the top two finishers from the 2008 WSOP have found a home at PokerStars. Champion Peter Eastgate was the first Dane and youngest player (title previously held by Phil Hellmuth) to win the WSOP and now plays as a Team PokerStars under the name “PeteEastgate.” He’s relatively new to the poker profession, but he didn’t waste any time climbing to the top, paying the $10,000 Main Event buy in himself, and then taking home $9 million last November.
Ivan Demidov, from Russia, started his career in poker online and played professionally for only two years before going head to head with Eastgate at the 2008 WSOP Final Table. Following in the footsteps of fellow Russian, Alexander Kravchenko, who placed 4th in 2007 Main Event (also a Team PokerStars Pro), Demidov made his country proud cashing 2nd and earning $5.8 million to become the biggest winning Russian player ever. He appropriately plays under the name “Ivan Demidov” at PokerStars.
These two will now be gracing the PokerStars tables with their pro-status presence. For these two to face off again just for fun to honor their new deal with PokerStars would make for an intriguing game and a genius publicity stunt.
