James Akenhead, Full Tilt Poker Pro and November Nine finalist, has been working it lately, proving that he deserves his place at the final table of the 2009 WSOP Main Event. He will soon make his third final table appearance in three months on the Full Tilt sponsored tourney, the Poker Million, to air on Sky Sports TV in December, and he may just take the WSOP Main Event by storm next month.
This November 7th, he’ll appear with the other eight WSOP Main Event finalists to compete for the title of World Champion of poker for 2010, a first place prize of $8.5 million, and the chance to go down in the poker history books forever. He may in fact have an advantage over the other eight players, though, because of his commitment to poker since he took his place in the November Nine back in the summer. He has continued to play poker, not letting the WSOP Main Event cloud his game like other some of the other November Nine players who opted to take a break from poker until the big day.
During this month alone, he made the WSOPE (World Series of Poker Europe) Main Event final table in London and finished 9th, taking home more than $70,000. There’s just no better practice than that for the WSOP Main Event in November. He can only improve.
Also this month, on October 9th, he won the second semi-final for the Poker Million, which qualified him for the Poker Million final table. During this feat, he knocked out both Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Antonio Esfandiari in one swift hand.
Akenhead is one of the leading poker players from the UK and is excited about his third final table appearance this year. He says, “I’ve watched previous Poker Million’s on television, so to get to the final table in my first appearance is something I’m proud of. It’s the biggest tournament of this structure I’ve ever played in.”
In the Poker Million, with 338,000 chips, he’ll face six competitors including other Full Tilt Poker players, Dag Martin Mikkelsen, Taylor Caby (Cardrunner co-founder), and Peter Vasiliou (Full Tilt qualifier and travel consultant based in London). There’s still one spot open, though, for the Poker Million via the Last Chance promo at Full Tilt Poker to be held on November 22nd. However, only Ireland and UK residents are eligible. The winner of this tournament will skip the heats and semi-fianls and go straight to the final table.
Despite the fact that Akenhead will be shortstacked at the Main Event in November, this means nothing in the game of poker, and his fellow November Nines who include Phil Ivey and Steven Begleiter should take head and perhaps step up their games for this guy, who is obviously in the favors of Lady Luck this year.
