The first episode of the highly anticipated 6th season premiere of High Stakes Poker aired this past Sunday on the Game Show Network (GSN) much to the delight of fans. Kara Scott, who replaced AJ Benza, was an obvious hit and did a great job interviewing the players following key hands. They also added some new segments to the show, which worked nicely and included “30 seconds with Kara Scott” and “Did You Know?”
The episode featured Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, Andreas Hoivold, Dario Minieri, and Antonio Esfandiari, all of whom bought in for $200K. Also playing were Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan, who bought in for $500K.
To recap the episode, Ivey was the biggest winner and Hellmuth was the biggest loser. Ivey ended up with more than $330K in profit, thanks to some big wins against Hellmuth and Hoivold, but Hellmuth busted out before the show was even halfway over and ended up leaving after losing a large majority of his stack in two early hands against Esfandiari and Ivey.
Hellmuth first lost to Ivey with AJ offsuit that didn’t hold up to Ivey’s QQ. Not long after, Hellmuth lost a $105K pot to Esfandiari when Hellmuth’s King-high flush couldn’t beat Esfandiari’s Ace-high flush. Hellmuth’s final blow came when he Ivey called an $80K raise and won.
The popular show airs Sundays at 8 p.m./7 p.m. Central Time on GSN. Episode 2 will air on February 21, 2010 and will feature Eli Elezra. The show is taped at the Golden Nugget in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada and serves as the premier cash game of poker to ever air on television. The top poker professionals of the world go up against amateurs to risk hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money. What could be more fun to watch?
Future episodes of High Stakes Poker Season 6 will feature Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Mike Matusow, and Phil Laak.
