Nine Minus Seven Equals Two

Written by Stefan | Monday, November 9th, 2009

After a long-awaited four months, the two finalists of the 2009 WSOP Main Event have been declared. The 14 and a half hour day dwindled the November nine down to the November two, ending just before 6:00 a.m. PST.

The first to go was James Akenhead, who lost with pock 3s to Kevin Schaffel’s pocket 9s. Only a couple of hands later, Schaffel was next to fall when he went all in with Eric Buchman who landed four Kings on the turn and river, burying Schaffel’s pocket Aces. Akenhead left the table with $1.26 million and Scaffel left with a cool $1.3 million.

The next to go was Phil Ivey, who challenged Darvin Moon all in with AK. Moon had AQ and caught another Q on the flop. By the time the river was dealt, Moon was still holding the better hand. Ivey’s elimination was the disappointment of many who had put their money on him to take the 2009 title. In 7th place, Ivey took $1.4 million.

Steven Begleiter was next on the block, who was also knocked out by Moon. Moon, who accredited his place in the November Nine to pure luck of the draw, caught an Ace on the river, which beat Begleiter’s Queens, shafting him with about $1.59 million in cash winnings. Next to go all in was Jeff Shulman with pocket 7s up against Antoine Saout’s A9. After a 9 fell on the flop, that was all she wrote. Shulman cashed out with $1.95 million.

Saout then began to embark on an amazing run throughout the late night/early morning hours, becoming chip leader and doubling up via Eric Buchman with 89 million in chips. Buchman, who had otherwise managed to keep a healthy chip stack, was left with a mere 9 million in chips. Short stacked, nonetheless, he doubled up from Moon, only to give it right back a few hands later when his A5 was crushed by Darvin’s KJ. Buchman took 4th place and $2.5 million.

As the sun began to come up on the final four, the last hand saw Cada’s AK beat Saout’s pocket 8s with a King on the river, awarding Saout with a $3.5 million payout on his $50 online satellite investment.

So that leaves Darvin Moon and Joseph Cada to battle it out on Monday, November 9th at 10:00 p.m. Vegas time at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino inside the Penn and Teller Theater. Blinds will start at 500,000/1,000,000. Cada, only 21, is in a nice position to take the title of youngest WSOP Main Event Champion away from last year’s Peter Eastgate with 135,950,000 chips against Moon’s 59 million.

Will lady luck continue to smile down upon Moon, the self-proclaimed amateur who claims he’s never even played poker online, or will the amazing chip lead and youthful determination of Cada take down the title of 2009 WSOP Main Event Champion? By the way, Doyle Brunson’s got his money on Moon.
