The 2009 Poker Hall of Fame inductee was announced last week, as 62-year-old Mike Sexton sat in his hotel room in London while he was awaiting the following day’s PartyPoker World Open V final table appearance. It was there that he received a phone call from Seth Palansky, WSOP communications director, who was calling to congratulate him on being voted into the most prestigious group of poker players in the world, the Poker Hall of Fame.
Sexton said of the moments following the phone call, “It was kind of strange to be sitting there all by myself because there were so many people I wanted to thank. I wish I could have called every one of them, right there and then.”
He did call his wife, Karen, and his brother, Tom, but all the others will have to wait until his acceptance speech that he will deliver on November 7 at the Rio All-Suites in Las Vegas during induction ceremony that will make this 25-year poker veteran an official Hall of Famer. He was the only candidate of the nine contenders who received 75% of votes from the voting panel, the required minimum to achieve acceptance. The voting panel consisted of 17 living Poker Hall of Fame members and 15 members of the media.
Sexton also said, “There are a lot of people in my life who helped me reach the Hall of Fame. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
The long-time World Poker Tour announcer says that his role in the industry had a lot to do with being in the right place at the right time, which afforded some lucky occurrences for his career that took a home game player out of North Carolina and made him into the professional player, broadcaster, and ambassador that he is today. Hats off!
