The 63-player National Heads-Up Poker Championship of 2009, held at Caesars Palace in the Poker Tournament Room, awarded Huck Seed with the first place title and a $500K cash prize earlier this month. Second place went to Vanessa Rousso, from Team PokerStars, but not after a good fight. Seed made it through a long list of defeats, including Gus Hansen, Jonathan Little, and Sam Farha, but Rousso held her own knocking out Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, and Phil Ivey.
The single-elimination competition kicked off the morning of March 6 and went through Sunday, March 8. The final winner was determined after a best of three championship match between Seed and Rousso, in which Seed won the first two matches. The winning hand was a mere K/7 off-suit, but it was enough.
Seed, who has cashed in every NHPC ever played, commented that “This has always been one of my favorite tournaments of the year.” He continued, “I’ve played well in the past, but things especially went my way this weekend, and I was able to make a run all the way to the top.”
Rousso, who was recently announced as the new GoDaddy.com spokesperson (GoDaddy sponsored the tournament), made the best run for a female in the history of the tournament. Prior to Rousso’s success this year, in 2007 Shannon Elizabeth made it as far as the semi-finals.
The tournament, which is taped for NBC, will run on television beginning April 12 for six Sundays in a row. Jon Miller, Executive VP of NBC Sports said, “Huck Seed showcased his tremendous skills by defeating the best group of participants we’ve ever had. We had a fantastic tournament. The response to this year’s event has been tremendous and we look forward to many more years of this prestigious competition.”
