The Game Show Network (GSN) will bring back the popular TV show, High Stakes Poker, come February, 2010. This will be the 6th season of the hit show, which translates to a great run, in poker TV years. A good number of television series that are based on poker don’t make it that long, perhaps because it’s more fun to play poker than watch. In fact, GSN canceled the World Poker Tour (WPT) show following its 6th season. At any rate, High Stakes Poker must be thrilling enough to get the ratings, and there are rumors that the show will be filmed on location at the Golden Nugget in Downtown Las Vegas. This is the same venue the show held in the 2006 season, so the Nugget is no stranger to the bright lights and cameras and welcomes the attention.
As usual, Gabe Kaplan and AJ Benza will host the show providing entertaining commentary, but the real entertainment value comes from the players banter like that of Tom “durrrr” Dwan’s visit last season. The story goes that Dwan took the biggest pot in the history of the show, worth $919K from Barry Greenstein. Also in the hand was Peter Eastgate, 2008 WSOP grand champion, so you can imagine the table talk that went on in that game.
Other guests on season 5 include director Nick Cassavettes (The Notebook), Poker Stars player Joe Hachem (2005 WSOP winner), Full Tilt’s Howard Lederer, and regulars like Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Eli Elezra, and others. Antonio Esfandiari actually did 47 pushups on the show when he lost a prop bet during the first episode.
Dwan will likely return for the new season, especially since he scooped the last pot of season 5 worth $514K, but the date has not been set yet for taping. Greenstein did say on ESPN.com’s Inside Deal that High Stakes Poker will probably start filming in November. In the past, it has aired on Sunday nights for one hour (last year this was opposite Annie Duke’s run on Celebrity Apprentice, which may have stolen some of the ratings. This season though is expected to be even more popular than the last after the buzz of Dwan’s antics have had time to circulate the Internet.
