Back in September, we announced the sixth season of the highly-acclaimed television show High Stakes Poker would be set to air in early 2010. However, Gabe Kaplan’s co-host, AJ Benza, will not be joining him.
The first season of High Stakes Poker aired back in January 2006 and over the past three years has become one of the most popular TV poker shows to ever hit cable television. What made the show so unique was not only the high-stake action and the big-name poker celebrity players, but also the charisma that was shared between the two co-hosts, Kaplan and Benza. The two shared a humorous rapport that appealed to viewers, which causes concern that the show might not be the same now without Kaplan’s chatty counterpart.
High Stakes Poker airs on the Game Show Network (GSN), which has reportedly decided to replace Benza, much to his disappointment, with Vanessa Rousso. Benza’s blog states, “I flat out told the guys who will remain unnamed - oh screw it was Bary Nugent and David Shiff - that if you got the best pizza in town for 5 seasons, why try and add licorice to it. I also told them I am the guy who does my own publicity for the show because GSN has NEVER set up not even as much as a radio interview for me. So I scour Internet poker sites and make myself available and - voila! - instant publicity.”
Benza also noted that he all but begged GSN to keep him on the show, offering everything from taking a pay cut to emotional blackmail, but nothing seemed to work. He told them, “If I don’t get my gig back, you’re basically putting a man and his family on the street. Is that what you want on your conscience?”
He did end the blog post on a positive note, taking a proud bow and writing, “So no more High Stakes Poker without the kid. I hope you like the female they toss in front of you. And I hope the repartee between she and Gabe works likes ours did. And look on the bright side: If she stinks…..I might be back for HSP 7.”
