Earlier this month, American poker player, Aaron Gustavson, won the EPT London Poker Festival Main Event and a hefty cash payout of £850,000, but what makes this win even more significant is that he won the tournament in a final heads-up against reigning World Series of Poker champion and Team PokerStars PRO, Peter Eastgate.
The tournament consisted of a £5,300 buy-in and was the largest poker tournament in poker history to take place in the UK. The EPT London Poker Festival attracted 730 players from all corners of the world, and the last man standing was 23-year-old Gustavson, one of 149 players who had actually won a seat to the event on PokerStars.
The heads-up battle between Gustavson and Eastgate started up just after the dinner break and was over after a mere seven hands. The tournament wrapped up in about 15 minutes after Gustavson’s AQ took out Eastgate’s A9, finishing him in second place and winning a £530,000 paycheck.
Gustavson, an online pro with a number of online wins and goes by “Aguskb” online, said, “I’m speechless, totally overwhelmed. I don’t think it’s going to hit me for a quite a while. Having this title is amazing – a dream come true.”
Gustavson will buy a new home in Vegas with his winnings and has his eye on a Porsche. As part of his EPT London Poker Festival prize, he’s also guaranteed a seat in the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. Other successes include a Sunday Warm Up win back in July, which earned him $135,000 and a 12th place finish in the PokerStars $530 NLHE World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) in September.
As for Eastgate, he said, “It’s been an amazing ride. I made it to second place, which is far more than you hope for going into a final table. Big applause for Aaron who won – he deserved it. I’m pleased I made it to heads-up.”
