The World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Event has resulted in a new champion. Las Vegas’ own, Barry Shulman, won the 2009 £10,000 buy-in/$5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Main Event, beating out lovable Daniel Negreanu.
The 63-year-old CEO of Card Player Magazine and Shulman Media, Barry Shulman, is a Seattle native who became a real estate millionaire and retired in the 90s and moved to Vegas to play professional poker. He then bought out Card Player Magazine, the poker industry’s leading publication, serving as president and publisher of the company. Later, his son, Jeff Shulman, infamous member of the 2009 November Nine, took on the title of editor of the publication in 2001.
As it turns out, poker runs in Jeff’s blood, as his mother, wife of Barry, is also a devoted poker player, appearing frequently on the tournament circuit and many WSOP events. She was there when Barry won the £801,603 ($1,283,687) first place prize, enduring the entire 16 ½ hour final tournament. In addition, Barry has two WSOP wins under his belt, eight final table finishes, and 14 cash finishes in WSOP events, making for a total of $1,574,955 in career WSOP winnings.
Barry’s WSOPE victory s only the second win by a US player. Other WSOPE winners come from countries all over the world including Denmark, Finland, Germany, UK, Canada, Norway, Italy, and Afghanistan.
After winning, Barry commented, “It’s a lot of fun for me to be here right now. It’s been great. When I moved to Vegas, I took up poker. I tried to prove that I could beat the best in the world. I got pretty good for a while, but then I started to focus more on my business at Card Player (magazine). Since then, I have not been playing as hard. Now, I’m back on the winning trail and feeling very good about it.”
It is unknown where Barry stands on his son’s aversion towards Harrah’s WSOP and his threat to dispose of his WSOP if he wins next month, but he did say that his words to Jeff are, “I did my part. Now, you do your part. It’s your turn to win.”
