Last month we reported the story of TJ Cloutier’s 2005 WSOP bracelet that had reportedly been listed on the online auction site, eBay. The appearance of such a coveted item that is so much more than a piece of jewelry or lot of gold, shocked and stunned the poker community and left us wondering why. Now, that question has been answered.
Apparently Cloutier is not the person who actually listed the bracelet, but he did turn the bracelet over to a pawn shop for some quick cash with the intentions of buying the bracelet back out of hawk. Unfortunately though, he was too late.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Cloutier admitted. “Yeah, it’s mine. I was short. I pawned it. I tried to get it back with my ticket but I was too late.”
Luckily though, Cake Poker saved the day and announced on the Cake Poker Blog that they had purchased the prized WSOP bracelet for $4,006 on eBay with the initial intentions of keeping the bracelet or awarding it to a loyal Cake Poker player. However, they soon realized that wasn’t the right thing to do. The blog explained:
“Since winning the bid and celebrating wildly, we have taken some time to reflect on our glorious new prize. As much as we would love to have a WSOP bracelet, or even award it to one of our cherished poker players, we can’t, in good conscience keep it from the man who rightfully won it, which is why we’ve decided to return it to TJ Cloutier… just as soon as we have some fun with it.”
Exactly what they have in mind when they say “fun” is not clear, but they did receive much props from Cloutier’s son, John W. Cloutier, who posted the following comment on Gambling911:
“Cake has showed so much Class here! I am TJ’s Son John Cloutier, it is good to see Poker give back to one of the Players who has given so much to the game. Regardless of why they ended up on ebay unless you have lived a perfect life and made no mistakes you can keep your opinons to your selves. Show a little respect for a very Nice and Approachable man! Thank you for renewing some of my faith in the ‘NEW’ Poker World. From Seattle! Later!”
Despite the typos, John W. did say some very nice words about Cake and the poker community in general, however, it makes you wonder why he was so bitter towards the “NEW” Poker World in general.
