Cada Reaches for the Moon: the 2009 World Champion Poker Player

Written by Marcus | Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

In what is being said was the best final table to ever be played in any WSOP Main Event last night, 21-year-old Joe Cada caught the moon when he became the very youngest ever Main Event winner, winning more than $8.5 million dollars and taking home the title of WSOP World Champion of Poker. In second place, was Darvin Moon, whom if not for the WSOP, the world would have never known.

Taking the 40th annual title, Cada now has the world at his feet, and it’s likely that even after this win, he’ll continue to play poker like a mad man because that’s what he does. He entered the final table with a massive chip lead, but soon became short stacked when Moon’s aggressive poker gave him a 100 million chip lead over Cada.

It seems like Moon’s been taking some advice from the pros. He says, “Well you got to take the man’s game away from him. Use the man’s game and see where he goes.”

But Cada, from Shelby Township, Michigan, was ultimately the one who took the game back from Moon. He hit a straight on the river, came up 20 million chips, and about 2 ½ hours later, the hand that broke the camel’s back was dealt.

The board showed 10 clubs, 5 diamonds, 9 hearts, and 10 diamonds. Cada pushed in with 3 million chips. Moon re-raised and all-in bet on his Jack hearts and 9 diamonds. Moon showed his 7/8 suited clubs. Moon would need a Jack or a 6 on the river, but unfortunately a 3 fell.

Moon reflects, “That’s the hand I messed up. I should have raised on the flop where he had middle pair.”

The final hand, though put both players all-in pre-flop with pocket 9s for Cada and QJ suited for Moon. The flop fell: 8 clubs, 2 clubs, 7 spades, helping neither player. A King hit the turn and a second 7 hit the river, which ultimately was the end of the road for Moon.

Moon was asked what the difference in winning first and second place was. His response went like this: “Oh hell yeah, $3 million dollars, what do you mean what’s the difference? Am I sad about it? Am I depressed? Hell no.” He did win almost $5.2 million for 2nd place.

Teary-eyed Cada nodded to his opponent and faced the crowd following the announcement of his win by WSOP commissioner, Jeffery Pollack. He was presented with poker’s most esteemed honor and said, “I want to thank my friends and family for taking time away from work and school to be here,” as his fans erupted with cheers.

In about one week, Cada will have his 22nd birthday. He remarked on his accomplishment: “I’ve dreamed of winning this tournament, and to do it the first year out of the gate is unbelievable,” said Cada. “This is just amazing.”
