A New Definition of the November Nine

Written by Mathias | Friday, September 11th, 2009

The 2009 Class of the Poker Hall of Fame has been narrowed down to a list of nine names who will be eligible for induction into the prestigious club in November. Exactly 15 living Hall of Famers plus 15 members that comprise the Media Panel will cast their votes for who will be inducted for this year. The ballots will be sent to the voters this week, and they will have until October 2, 2009 to submit their final decisions.

The Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at the Rio Hotel All-Suites in Las Vegas, Nevada during a special Hall of Fame dinner. This also happens to coincide with the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table. This is the first dinner of its kind, held specifically to honor the inductees, who will be given the opportunity to make an induction speech upon receiving their commemorative trophy in front of family members and media.

The nine eligible contenders follow: Barry Greenstein, Dan Harrington, Phil Ivey, Tom McEvoy, Men Nguyen, Scott Nguyen, Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, and Mike Sexton. The voting body must judge which player most deserves the honor. Other criteria, which all of these guys have met, includes playing poker against acknowledged top competition, playing in high-stakes poker, playing consistently well and gaining the respect of his peers, standing the test of time, or for non-playing candidates, contributed to the overall success and growth of poker as a whole showing indelible positive and long-lasting results.

Tom “durrrr” Dwan, nominated for 2009, did not, unfortunately, make the final cut. The Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council stated that, “With all due respect to Mr. Dwan, one of the games most exciting young players, he does not currently meet the criteria for Hall of Fame selection. We wish him well and expect he will again be considered once he has ‘stood the test of time.’”

Players who made the final list but did not receive the 75%+ votes are still eligible for future induction consideration.
