Once again, it was the online operator biggie PokerStars who broke its own record for hosting the “Largest Online Poker Tournament” due to the much larger player base. In fact they had a ground breaking first of a 65,000 player turnout for their $1 and $130k Guaranteed tournament online. The previous record was of 35,000 players with PokerStars, a record that was set on the 28th December, 2008.
FullTilt was hoping to break the set record this year but PokerStars, managed to take them out with an even bigger turnout. Lately we heard a lot about Full Tilt Poker and their announcement and “Full Tilt Poker FIVE” promotion that they would be attempting to beat the previously held record. PokerStars, not one to give up their record title easily, also started organising their own tournament bigger and event better than before. They made an announcement that on the same day of the Full Tilt FIVE conclusion, they would try and break their own old record.
PokerStars ran its competing tournament with a lower buy-in of $1 compared to Full Tilt Poker’s $5 and having put a 50k player cap on their attempt. Full Tilt Poker added a full $250k to their prize pool, thus having a total of $500k in prize money, while PokerStars added $65k for a total of $130k in prize money.
At the end of day FullTilt did break the PokerStars record with 50,000 players but the latter still got the upper hand with a new record of 65,000 players, thus holding their title spot. PokerStars are still king with the Guinness Book of World Records, whilst many micro-stakes players managed to dramatically increase the size of their bankrolls. Finally, the Full Tilt Poker overall winner will take the prize of $45,000 in winnings.
We wonder what will happen at the next record breaking tournament, maybe Full Tilt Poker will reduce its 5$ buy in to less and might have a chance to become the new record title holder.
