There have been a few changes to the WSOP Player of the Year point factors for 2009. Jeffrey Pollack, along with Harrah’s, has announced one final adjustment to the point module after numerous requests by players. This year, the Main Event, which is the largest and most prominent event of all WSOP tournament events, will now count toward POY calculations.
2008’s POY, Erick Lindgren, landed the title last year after beating Barry Greenstein in the $50K HORSE event, but it won’t be until late November that we’ll know the 2009 POY, as we’ll have to wait until after the Main Event takes place in November.
WSOP VP Ty Stewart states, “We’re confident the inclusion of the Main Event to the Player of the Year race will add some drama and excitement to the conclusion of this year’s WSOP. The race is wide open this year but, as the past winners confirm, the player who wins this award will clearly be one of the game’s best for years to come.”
POY points are awarded to all players who cash in any WSOP event, except all satellite and “Second Chance Tournaments,” the $1,000 Casino Employees Event #1, the $1,000 World Championship Ladies Event #17, and the $1,000 World Championship Seniors Event #43. Most events reward points to players based on their overall finishing money positions, but shootout tournaments (Events #22, 29, 41, and 50) will award points to players based on their levels of advancement.
Point totals are cumulative throughout the duration of the 2009 WSOP, and so far, Thang Luu and Vitaly Lunkin are tied in first place with 100 points each, both earning one bracelet, but there are many more events to go. Past POY title earners include Tom Schneider, 2007; Jeff Madsen, 2006; Allen Cunningham, 2005; and Daniel Negreanu, 2004.
