Apparently some of the WSOP attendees may be running low on cash, or perhaps they are saving their bankrolls for future games because the big $10,000 buy-in to Event #37 only attracted 164 players, though the game was Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo-8, which isn’t quite as popular or well-played by the masses. Jeff “Iceman” Lisandro won the first place prize and more than $430,000 of the $1.5 million prize pool after more than three hours of heads up play with Farzad Rouhani, who took 2nd place and $266,804. This was Lisandro’s 2nd WSOP this year, but it wouldn’t be his last. Doyle Brunson took 7th place in Event #37, proving he’s not going anywhere in the poker world just yet.
Lisandro may just be our next Player of the Year for the 2009 WSOP. This year, by the 47th event, he’s cashed six events and won three bracelets (Event #16, Event #37, and Event #44)—two seven-card stud events and one Razz, picking up 355 POY points and now the leader in the race.
Lisandros says, “(It would) be great (to be the Player of the Year). It’s like I’ve climbed a massive mountain and I can see the top, but I’m getting really tired. The enemy is just behind me, and the only way I can lose is if I slip.”
Players who are competition for Lisandros include Ville Wahlbeck with 275 points and Phil Ivey with 242. So far, Wahlbeck has five cashes for this year and one bracelet. Ivey has two 1st place wins for 2009 and has also cashed five times. The last two of the top five POY contenders are Brock Parker and James Van Alstyne, tied with 220 points each.
Lisandro adds, “It’s not over, it’s far from over; I figure I need one more table to lock it up. It is going to be tough as there are not many events left.”
