Tom McEvoy spent the first years of his adult life as an accountant after earning a BS Honors degree in accounting. After working hard into his thirties, Tom decided that he had had enough of the accounting life and decided to look for a new way to earn a living.
It was in 1978 that Tom decided to try and play poker for a living. Tom had learned to play poker by watching his grandmother play at a very early age and played it regularly from then on. As a poker professional Tom has the reputation as one of the greatest players of all time.
Tom is not shown on television as much as other players but he is very well respected in the field. Tom was playing in the World Series of Poker when only the best of the best competed and he has four WSOP bracelets to prove it.
1983 was Tom’s best year in poker when he won the $1,000 Limit Hold’em event and the Main Event winning a total of almost $700,000. He won his other WSOP bracelets in 1986 for $1,000 Limit Razz and in 1992 in the $1,500 Omaha Limit event.
An odd fact about Tom is that he is opposed to smoking. In 1998 Tom helped to organize the first ever tournament where smoking was not allowed. People were reluctant to hold such a tournament but a large number of players showed up to participate. In 2002, Tom was able to convince Benny Binion Behnen to make the WSOP a non smoking tournament in exchange for free poker lessons.
Tom has also authored and co authored several books on the subject of poker. He has worked with T.J. Courtier, Brad Daugherty, Max Stern and Don Vines on poker books and he also works as a columnist for CardPlayer Magazine. Tom represents PokerStars at live events and plays on the online poker room as well.
Tom has had a long lasting career in the poker industry and as of 2008 Tom has earned over $2.7 million in live tournament winnings. On his off time he spends quality time with his three children or pursuing his many hobbies.
