The late-night television line-up for NBC will include a fifth season of the hit poker show, Poker After Dark. The new season, which will air new episodes in late 2008 and 2009, promises to be even more entertaining than last season with more cash games and featuring new players and celebrities. Episodes will include the traditional six-hand No Limit Hold ‘em tournament where winner takes all, as well as lots of high-stakes cash action.
This show is reminiscent of the Celebrity Poker Showdown series, but alongside some of the celebrity appearances will be new poker stars like Ivan Demidov, Tom “durrr” Dwan, and old hands like Doyle Brunson and Chris Ferguson. This season’s location is Vegas’ Golden Nugget Casino, which has been renovated over the past few years.
The show hopes to bring some fresh players to televised poker, who have done great online, but haven’t had the opportunity to appear on TV. A spokesperson for Poker After Dark says of players like Cole “CTS” South, Taylor “GreenPlastic” Caby, and David “Raptor” Benefield, “They are great young guys and great players. They’ve made their mark and deserve recognition.” You may recognize Raptor as the friend and roommate of Tom Dwan, both of whom are living it up and enjoying being on top of the poker game (rumors of a reality show about these two have surfaced).
Not all players will be new-to-television, however. Professional poker players will be joined with professional actors, Don Cheadle and Jason Alexander, as well as professional baseball player, Orel Hershisher. With each episode comes a new theme with a twist on the tables. “USA vs. Italy” puts US poker players, Chris Ferguson, Erick Lingdren, and Howard Lederer at a table with Italian poker players, Marco Traniello, Max Pescatori, and Dario Minieri. Episode two, “Celebrities and Mentors” puts Orel Hershier, Jason Alexander, and Don Cheadle up against their poker mentors, Gavin Smith, Barry Greenstein, and Phil Gordon. Other episodes include “International Week,” “Dream Match III,” “Nets vs. Vets,” and “The Hellmuth Bash,” in which the Poker Brat will face poker rival, Tom Dwan.
The first episode will air on December 29, 2008 and will run through June 2009.
