Over the weekend, Phil Hellmuth (a.k.a. “The Poker Brat”) was playing on UltimateBet, as he usually does, minding his own business, when he wrongfully won a pot of almost $6,000. UltimateBet is blaming the incident on a glitch in their software after the winning mystery player, who won the pot with a losing hand, was revealed on the 2+2 Forum. How paradoxical that it happened to be Hellmuth, UB’s biggest fan.
Hellmuth’s opponent, “DOUBLEBALLER,” has stated on 2+2 (2+2 username: DaBruce) that the money he rightfully won at the $200/$400 Hold ‘em game was refunded to him by UltimateBet.
After overcoming the scandal of May 2008, that forced Ultimate Bet to admit that former employees did in fact hack into the accounts of high-stakes players and foresaw their hole cards, this makes the second Ultimate mishap of 2008. Another online poker room, Absolute Poker, was involved in a similar scandal in 2007. The irony is that both of these dubious poker sites are owned by Tokwiro Enterprises.
UltimateBet will now have to investigate the new problem and has released the following statement regarding the issue:
“Earlier today we learned about a poker hand where our system paid out the losing player instead of the correct winning hand. The hand number is #1162170993.
We are investigating this software malfunction as our absolute top priority.
This is the first incident of this kind we have encountered.
We are currently examining the poker system and the application logs in order to pinpoint the cause of this malfunction.
Paul Leggett”
But will UB players give them yet another chance, or will this be the tragic flaw that ultimately marked the beginning of the end for UB. The biggest question, though, whether or not this is really “the first incident of this kind.” UB players must be racking their brains for an instance when they might have been shafted a pot.
And what about Hellmuth? Will he be as “bratty” towards the mistakes made by his beloved sponsor as he is towards his fellow poker players? I guess it depends on how much they pay him. As of now, he is down $5599…
