UK’s John Kabbaj Wins Second WSOP Bracelet in Five Years

Written by Marcus | Sunday, June 29th, 2014

In a field stacked with experience, deserving John Kabbaj from the UK came out ahead in the 25th event of the 2014 WSOP, $2,500 Omaha/7 Card Stud Hi-Lo. Now a two-time bracelet winner, Kabbaj out played 469 other players including runner up and one-time bracelet winner, Thomas Keller to earn a $267K payout, making his 16th cash at a WSOP event and amassing more than $1.7 million in career WSOP earnings. Kabbaj’s first WSOP bracelet was earned five years ago at the 2009 WSOP in the $10K PLH World Championship event.

Kabbaj said, “I have had probably the worst two years of my life. I lost everything I had and had to rebuild. I have started a new life in the last six months and now this is looking good for the future.”

He is hopeful that this win marks a new era in his life, as he has just recently relocated to Austria where he lives happily in the mountains. He decided it was time for a change and wanted to get out of the city. He lost 25 pounds by walking his dog in the past three months, and positive lifestyle changes have improved every area of his life from health to poker.

“When you make a World Series final [table], there is always going to be good players,” explained Kabbaj, and he knows what he’s talking about. Going up against some of the best, Kabbaj has what it takes and can hold his own, confidently, among some of the best players to ever play the game including five other fellow bracelet winners in the final table alone. Collectively, this final table had 15 bracelets with Erik Seidel’s eight and Tom Schneider’s four. Seidel finished in sixth, while Schneider finished in eight place.

The prize pool generated more than $1 million and paid the top 48. Noteworthy mentions include Ally Jaffrey Shulman, 14th; Owais Ahmed, 15th; Matt Glantz, 18th; Mike Matusow, 19th; John D’Agostino, 35th; and George Danzer, 39th, who has already won two bracelets this year, just 11 days apart.
