One of the newest names to hit the online poker world is Isildur1, who is also arguably one of the best players in the history of online poker. The catch is, no one knows his true identity, and many theories surrounding why he’s so secretive about his name have circulated the Internet. Many believe he’s a 19-year-old Swedish poker player by the name of Viktor Blom. If this is true, he could owe the Swedish government hundreds of millions in taxes.
In Sweden, tax law states that every wager placed on games of chance, like poker, can be taxed by 30%. If you want to get an idea of how much he may owe, you can take the number of hands he’s played, multiply it by the average value of each bet he’s likely wagered, and then multiply that total by 30%. While this isn’t known exactly, it’s estimated that each hand constitutes a bet of about $4,000 per player. If the 294,000 hands Isildur1 played (estimated by a tracking site) is correct, doing a little more math could put Isildur1 at owing around $177 million in taxes, just in estimation.
This is total theory though, because it is impossible to know if he is in fact a Swede, how many hands he’s really played, and how much he actually wagered on each hand. Then, the Swedish government would have to file a case against said player and prove that Blom is him and all the above mentioned data.
So, Isildur1 is safe staying out of the limelight for now. PartyPoker has even invited him to play live and to help him keep his identity secret, allowing him to play in disguise. Like many young poker pros, though, Isildur1 may let the idea of being famous get to his head and out himself before anyone else does.
