Men “The Master” Nguyen won his seventh WSOP bracelet this week in the 2010 WSOP Seven-Card Stud $10,000 buy-in event (Event #10). This seventh WSOP win ties Nguyen for the sixth place spot for most bracelet wins. Also at sixth place with seven bracelets are Bill Baxter (Hall of Fame inductee) and Phil Ivey.
The Master, from Bell Gardens, California, beat out a 150-player field to win the gold bracelet—the first for him in a long time—seven years to be exact. During the 90s, the Vietnam native was one of the biggest players in the game with more than 100 major tourney cashes and titles including WSOP bracelets for Seven-Card Stud in 1992, Limit Hold ‘em in 1995, Seven-Card Stud High-Low Split in 1995, Limit Omaha High-Low Split in 1996, and Seven-Card Stud and Limit Triple Draw, both in 2003. In his career, he’s taken close to $2.2 million in WSOP cashes alone, cashing in 67 events in all. This ranks him second to Phil Hellmuth, who has 76 WSOP cashes, on the WSOP’s all-time list. Hellmuth, winner of 11 WSOP bracelets, is also first place for most final table appearances with 40, while Nguyen is tied with TJ Cloutier at 38.
Nguyen said after winning, “This is very, very big for me. The last two bracelets I won were in 2003, and now it’s 2010. I have not won any bracelets because a lot of people have come into our poker world. I haven’t won because it’s kind of hard now. It’s hard to break through.”
Along with the win, 55-year-old Nguyen brought home $394K.
“Every time I make a speech or get into an interview, I want to thank the United States of America for giving me this chance,” he said. Born in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, Nguyen immigrated to Malaysia on a boat a few years after the fall of South Vietnam in 1978. He was then granted political asylum in the US.
