The 2010 World Series of Poker has announced the WSOP Tournament of Champions. This No-Limit Hold ‘em event will be covered on ESPN and will air on Tuesday, August 3, during a special two-hour broadcast.
Ty Stewart, VP of Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment, said, “The Tournament of Champions brand has heritage in delivering the big moments. We’re thrilled to reinvent it around a model that should elevate the game by engaging millions of poker fans. We have received a lot of input from players and their affinity for the TOC, and we are excited for them and the fans and hope it’s here to stay.”
Twenty-seven players will play in the freeroll invitational, 20 of those players chosen by the public by vote. The vote began on March 15th and will remain open until June 15th at 12:00 a.m. ET. The top 20 players who get the most votes will be invited to play. These 20 players will all be WSOP bracelet holders, making 521 eligible living players up for entry.
Five of the entrants will be automatic, being the three previous TOC winners, along with the reigning WSOP and WSOPE champs. These players being Mike Matusow, Mike Sexton, and Annie Duke, along with Barry Shulman and Joe Cada.
Duke, the first TOC winner, said, “Tournaments like the Tournament of Champions help elevate poker to the level it deserves and I am honored to participate. Winning the TOC marks one of the most memorable events in my poker career and I’m ecstatic that the WSOP is hosting this prestigious event.”
The 41st annual WSOP will take place again this year at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The TOC will start on Sunday, June 27, and the final nine will reconvene on Sunday, July 4 where they will compete for a piece of the $1 million prize pool.
