With all the near hits, but mere misses with state governments trying to pass online poker bills and the udder failure of the Federal government to do anything about the issue, PokerStars has taken on the fight itself going state by state if they must, beginning with Nevada.
Although ground work has already been laid for online poker clubs such as PokerStars to join forces in the fight for legalization in Nevada, but their efforts have been thwarted by the big land-based casino entities, more specifically the MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment brands, who have already set up shop offering online casinos and online gambling services overseas.
Vegas mega brands don’t want to share any US territory with online poker sites. They want all the business to themselves, so if legalization in Nevada becomes a reality, companies like MGM and Caesars want US players to only be allowed to play at their name brand sites, not such sites as PokerStars and Full Tit Poker, for instance.
Randall Sayre, former gaming regulator in Nevada, now consultant for PokerStars, says it’s imprudent for the big casinos in Nevada to want to monopolize the industry. He believes it would be a golden opportunity to serve the US as the corporate headquarters for online poker and casino gambling, just as it is the hub for live casino operations. The opportunity should not be missed, according to Sayre. Otherwise, those who resist may be left behind when a gambling company or law maker does finally make a breakthrough, because this time will come. Those who aren’t present at that moment will not get a head start when hundreds and hundreds of Internet gaming websites suddenly retain licensure in the US and become competition for the land-based giants, who will be just another website in cyberspace.
