The public voting period for the Poker Hall of Fame nominees has ended, and Harrah’s has released the names of the top 10 poker pros who got the most votes. The Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council will now review the names and check qualifications. Those who do not meet requirements will be removed from the list.
The criteria that one must meet to be in the running for the Poker Hall of Fame follows: “A player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition; played for high stakes; played consistently well, gaining the respect of peers; stood the test of time; or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.”
The top 10 finalists include four WSOP Main Event champs including Chris Ferguson (2000 winner), Scotty Nguyen (1998 winner), Dan Harrington (1995 winner), and Tom McEvoy (1983 winner). Also, two women are in the running, Jennifer Harman and Linda Johnson. Both have contributed considerable amounts to poker in terms of charitable work, as well as contributions to the growth of the game for the female community. Two younger pros, Daniel Negreanu and eight-time WSOP bracelet winner with a Main Event final table appearance (2009), Phil Ivey, are also on the list. Erik Seidel also holds eight WSOP bracelets and shows up on the top 10 list, as well. Rounding out the list is Barry Greenstein, who has made a name for himself as a very generous poker pro.
Andrew Feldman, ESPN.com Poker Editor who will sit on the 17-member board of media panelists and for the Poker Hall of Fame Class of 2010, says, “The nominees this year show the amazing diversity that we have in the industry and there are definitely some names that stick out above the rest. Every player on the list will definitely deserve some credit.”
The 2010 inductee will be named at a ceremony in November at the Rio Las Vegas amidst the Main Event November Nine celebrations. The Class of 2009 saw WPT host Mike Sexton inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
