Thirty-three-year-old poker legend, Phil Ivey has earned his 8th WSOP bracelet this year in the $3,000 HORSE event, moving him into the top 5 bracelet winners in the history of the series. With 8 gold bracelets, Ivey is now tied in 5th place with Erik Seidel on the all-time WSOP bracelet wins list.
In addition to the bracelet, Ivey won a $329K purse and a few side bets he had made with fellow poker pros. Ivey took his bracelet from a final table that featured five former WSOP bracelet winners including Ivey, John Juanda, Jeffrey Lisandro, Ken Aldridge, and Bill Chen, all of whom cashed in one of the top 5 spots. Though he claims he doesn’t want to be a celebrity, he seems to have a hard time staying out of the spotlight. It’s the thrill and win Ivey is after.
Many are saying that this win means Ivey is back in the game after making it to the final table of the Main Event and then disappointing himself more so than his fans and busting out in 7th place, though he did win two WSOP bracelets last year. There are only other four other players who now hold more WSOP titles than Ivey—Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, and Johnny Moss.
Ivey commented after his win, “I think I can win 30 gold bracelets. I think I can reach that if I keep playing and stay healthy.”
Ivey’s total career earnings in WSOP cashes totals more than $5.2 million, which includes 22 final table appearances and 40 cashes. Overall, his career tourney wins have almost hit $13 million—which some believe to be the most won by any player in the history of poker.
