September is officially National Poker Month, and casinos and poker rooms across the US will be recognizing the game by hosting tournaments all month long that give half of their prize pools to charity organized in part by Poker Gives. Charitable recipients include Special Olympics of Nevada, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Step by Step Foundation, and Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
Co-founder of Poker Gives, Mike Sexton says, “In addition to all the goodwill it will bring to poker when we are able to present such large checks to charity, the participating card rooms will be listed in Bluff Magazine and we will conduct a drawing from that list. Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, and I will visit the winning card room and host a meet-and-greet and a free poker seminar.”
At least 25 poker rooms will be honoring National Poker Month including Harrah’s Tunica, Venetian Las Vegas, Aria Las Vegas, Binion’s Las Vegas, Golden Nugget Las Vegas, Oceans 11 California, El Dorado Reno, Win River Casino California, Isle Casino Pompano Park, and quite a few more located in Minnesota, Florida, Arizona, and Washington.
An online event will also take place on September 19 at 1:00 p.m. PT at Full Tilt. Winners of live and online events will go into a drawing on October 4 to win even more prizes including two WPT seats, a WPT Boot Camp spot, poker lessons with Sexton and Johnson, and even a vacation on Card Player Cruises.
Buy-ins range from $20 to $225, the online event costing only $20. Half of the buy-ins go to the players’ prize pool and the other half goes to the charity. Poker Gives is a two-year-old organization that uses the popular game of poker as a way to raise money for deserving charities.
