It’s a tight race, but that won’t scare off John Juanda who’s looking to nab the 2010 WSOP Player of the Year title. Currently tied with Frank Kassela in the Player of the Year standings, Juanda has earned 225 points so far and has raked in more than $745k in earnings in this year’s WSOP.
WSOP players earn POY points based on a “cumulative measure of performance during the 2010 World Series of Poker,” and receive points for open bracelet events only. John Juanda took the lead in the POY standings June 19th when he made the final table for the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. which he placed 3rd over-all.
From the start of the 2010 WSOP, Juanda has had a promising run placing 4th in the $50k Poker Players Championship, his first event, winning over $436k. Since then he’s gone on to three more final tables: 5th place in the $10k 7-card stud hi/lo, 4th place in the $10k Draw Lowball World Championship, and 3rd place in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E.
On the heels of Juanda are poker heavy-weights Dan Heimiller with 200 points, Michael Mizrachi with 190 points, and Men Nguyen and James Dempsey both with 180 points.
John Juanda has made quite a WSOP career for himself achieving 16 final tables and winning three bracelets in his first five years at the World Series of Poker. Since then, Juanda has gone on to win a fourth WSOP bracelet, 55 cashes, and won more than $3.9 million in WSOP earnings.
Juanda is definitely the WSOP player to watch out for. Although under-estimated, he’s got quite a track record, and the 2010 POY title is within his grasp. Event #45 didn’t work out to Juanda’s favor finishing 297th over-all, but he’s managed to take and keep the POY points lead thus far. We’ll have to wait and see if he can hang on!
