Texas poker legend, 80-year-old Amarillo Slim, was beaten and robbed in Amarillo, Texas the other day. He had gone to a hotel to meet someone and collect a 4-wheeler to hold as collateral for a $3,000 gambling debt. Slim reported, “The four-wheeler didn’t come, but the bogeyman did” after he was lured into a nearby field where he was attacked.
The assailants got away with $8,000 in cash and a 7.5-carat diamond ring worth $85,000. The beating resulted in a broken hand, thumb, and jaw, according to Amarillo Police Lt. Jim McKenny, who commented that it’s not surprising Slim had all that cash on him, and it wasn’t the first time he’d been robbed. In fact, Slim himself admitted that this was the fifth time he’s been robbed in the last year. He believes that someone must be looking out for him and stated, “They’re still sweating and I’m still betting.” McKenny blames the repeated robberies on his circle of gambling acquaintances that he hangs with. His jaw injury will require surgery.
“I don’t know what he hit me with, but it sure hurts,” Slim said. “They left me laying out there in that field. Certainly, they assumed I was dead.” He finally came to and made it to the front desk of the hotel, where the police were called. He did recognize the man that beat him, who Slim guessed to be in his late thirties. Slim was able to provide police with a phone number of the man. Maybe he’ll answer!
Amarillo Slim’s real name is Thomas Preston, won the 1972 World Series of Poker and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1992.
