“This is amazing. I still can’t believe I’m here,” said Joseph “sublime” Cheong after winning a spot in the 2010 WSOP November Nine.
So far in his short career, 24-year-old Cheong won his first big tourney earlier this year at the $300 NLH WSOP circuit event in San Diego last March. That win brought him a whopping $17K, but now he’s guaranteed at least $800K if he places 9th in the WSOP Main Event this November. In third position with 23.5 million in chips, he now has a very good chance to place even higher than 9th position.
Currently residing in La Mirada California, Cheong was born in Seoul, South Korea. He came to the US at six and has come a long way since. With a BS in Psychology and a Joint BA in Math in Economics, he’s been playing poker since 2007. He’s also known as “sublime” online at the tables at Full Tilt Poker. He actually won the Mini-FTOPs in 2009 and pocketed $55K.
When in college at the University of California San Diego, Cheong worked in the lit department for $12/hour to fund his buy-ins. It was poker that slowed him from graduating in his fourth year, though he did complete his degrees. He started playing poker in his fourth year, and it then took him two more years to graduate. After finishing school, he moved on to play poker full-time.
By the start of this summer, he had earned more than $300K in online tourney winnings before taking on the Main Event and landing a final table spot. Last summer, he didn’t even cash once in any of the nine 2009 WSOP events he bought into. This year is a different story; it may just be his year. After fighting his way through the playing field, he’s rightfully earned his spot and may just take the bracelet come November.
