“I’m going to win, 100%. I’m the best. I’m going to play the best poker game I’ve ever played and win that thing,” said Jonathan Duhamel after landing the leading chip position at the 2010 WSOP Main Event final table that will carry out this November.
French-Canadian born Duhamel has been playing poker for only a few years now, but as everyone knows, experience means little in the world of pro poker. Like John Dolan, second place chip leader in the November Nine this year, Duhamel dropped out of college to pursue a full-time career in poker. He made it through one year as a finance student before realizing his true calling. After depositing a mere $100 at an online poker room back in 2006, he found that he was pretty good. Not long after he was traveling the world playing poker, and he had cashed almost $100K when he found himself cashing twice at WSOP events this year and then moving on to land a seat at the final table.
Like many other Canadians, Duhamel likes playing hockey when he’s not playing poker. It’s that competitive edge that makes him so confident and perhaps even intimidating to fellow players. As the youngest player at the final table this year, Duhamel, 22, hold the most chips with close to 66 million. On being chip leader, he says, “I like that pressure. I live on pressure.”
He admits though that when play got down to 10-handed, everyone tightened up, which displeased him. “It was the most boring play ever,” he said. “Everybody was so tight, so because I was the chip leader, I had to abuse that and raise a lot of pots, so that’s what I did.”
While being chip leader by no means gives anyone rights to the WSOP championship, it will be interesting to see if Duhamel’s confidence turns out to work in his advantage.
