One of the three “Johns” at the final table of the 2010 WSOP Main Event, John Racener is no amateur. Though only 24 years old, he’s considered to be a very successful poker player—one to watch. He’s actually had more live tourney success than everyone at the final table but Michael Mizrachi, but Racener also has experienced online success as well. In total, he’s cashed well over $1 million live and about as much online.
What’s probably most interesting about Racener is how he started playing online poker. At the young age of 16, his mom agreed to stake him $50 at an online poker site. Within six months, he had turned that $50 into more than $30K! Self-taught and a quick learner, he started out on a winning streak. Out of a playing field that consisted of 3,300 players, he won the Sunday $500K (now the Sunday Million) on PokerStars for $130K before he ever turned 20.
Racener not only played poker at a young age, but he stayed in school, graduating from Florida Southern with an associate of arts degree and has been a frequent tournament player ever since. In 2007 he won a WSOP Circuit event in Atlantic City.
His fourth year to participate in the WSOP, 2010 was no different from any other year. He’s consistently made a final table in each year, only this year, it’s the final table that counts. In fourth position with 19 million chips, Racener is neither in good or bad position. He’s in the middle and comfortable with that.
“This is a dream come true,” said Racener. “I’m going to give it 100 percent, and I know if I do that, I’m going to get the best results possible.”
To prepare, Racener says he will study up on his opponents and watch the televised Main Event action when it airs. Coming up on almost 10 years of genuine experience, Racener does have an edge over all the other young guns at the table.
