Italian poker pro Filippo Candido is the only European who remains in the 2010 WSOP Main Event. With 16.4 million in chips and sixth-stacked, he has a chance to take down the final table and score a WSOP bracelet for his country. Candido is definitely not new to poker, winning the main event of the Italian Poker Tour last year in San Remo. He’s played poker for two years now and has amassed more than $200K in live and online winnings.
At 26 years old Candido is not shy. He blew kisses to the cameras and posed for photographers in interviews after he landed his spot in the November Nine. He’s got a great attitude, as well, which is refreshing to American poker.
“I love people, and I hope that people love me,” he said. “Among my friends, when there is a problem, I’m the first to resolve it… I think I’m a good guy. I’m friendly with all.”
He’s also proud to be playing in the November Nine and proud of his opponents, as well. “I respect my opponents so much, especially Duhamel [chip leader]. I would like to become a better player because my opponents are incredible,” he explains.
In order to improve his game, Candido plans on spending a lot of time in Vegas over the break and hopes to get a coach as well. He’s been playing poker since he was 21 and studied the classics in college before going on to law school, of which he dropped out to play poker.
“Now that I’m a part of the November Nine, I feel it’s my great opportunity,” Candido says. “I’m the first Italian that has even made the final table of the WSOP Main Event. It’s amazing.”
“Even though I’m a cash game player my dream was to make the final table of the WSOP Main Event,” he adds.
If attitude and positive energy mean anything in poker, then Candido has just as good a chance, if not better, at taking home Italy’s first WSOP Main Event bracelet.
